The Rajya Sabha witnessed a heated discussion after Opposition members raised concerns regarding a Delhi High Court judge whose proposed transfer was under scrutiny. Before the Supreme Court clarified that the transfer was unrelated to a fire incident at the judge’s official residence, Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh cited reports alleging that firefighters had recovered large sums of cash from the site.

Without naming the judge, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized that the malaise in the judiciary had been addressed through past legislation, referring to the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Bill, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2015. Dhankhar also stressed the delay in bringing the issue to light.

Additionally, Dhankhar addressed a petition by 55 MPs seeking action against an Allahabad High Court judge for controversial remarks. He confirmed procedural steps were being taken but noted irregularities in signatures on the petition.

Promising transparency, Dhankhar stated he would discuss a structured debate on judicial accountability with House leaders to ensure systemic, transparent, and effective responses to such issues.
